Everything you need to specify reinforcement: rebar diameters and weights, standard mesh references, and CARES-approved cut and bent service from Heiton Steel.
What is rebar and what grade is used in Ireland?
Rebar is ribbed steel bar cast into concrete to carry tensile loads that concrete alone cannot. The standard reinforcing grade is B500B (ribbed, high-bond, 500 N/mm² characteristic yield) supplied to IS EN 10080 / IS 4671. Our rebar is produced through CARES-approved branches operating to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
Rebar sizes and weights
| Diameter (mm) | Weight (kg/m) | Cross-section (mm²) |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 0.395 | 50.3 |
| 10 | 0.617 | 78.5 |
| 12 | 0.888 | 113.1 |
| 16 | 1.579 | 201.1 |
| 20 | 2.466 | 314.2 |
| 25 | 3.854 | 490.9 |
| 32 | 6.313 | 804.2 |
| 40 | 9.864 | 1256.6 |
Weight per metre = 0.00617 × diameter². Cross-section = π/4 × diameter².
Reinforcing mesh (fabric) references
Standard mesh is supplied in sheets of 4.8 m × 2.4 m (11.52 m²). The “A” number is the cross-sectional steel area in mm² per metre width.
| Reference | Wire (mm) | Mesh (mm) | Weight (kg/m²) | Per sheet (kg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A142 | 6 | 200×200 | 2.22 | 25.6 |
| A193 | 7 | 200×200 | 3.02 | 34.8 |
| A252 | 8 | 200×200 | 3.95 | 45.5 |
| A393 | 10 | 200×200 | 6.16 | 71.0 |
A142 is common in domestic slabs and paths; A393 suits heavily loaded slabs. Your engineer will specify the reference.
What is cut and bent rebar?
Cut and bent (also “cut and bend”) means rebar supplied pre-cut to length and pre-bent to the shapes on your bar bending schedule, ready to fix on site. It saves labour, cuts waste and improves accuracy. As one of Ireland’s largest cut and bent manufacturers, Heiton Steel processes bar to your schedule across 6 nationwide steel branches, all CARES approved.
We also carry an extensive range of reinforcement accessories such as spacers, chairs, tying wire and tools.
Typical applications
- Foundations, ground beams, pile caps and rafts
- Floor slabs, paths and driveways (mesh)
- Columns, beams and retaining walls (cut and bent rebar)
- Everything from a one-off house build to large construction contracts
Order in three steps
- Send your bar bending schedule or tell us bar sizes, shapes, lengths and mesh references.
- We manufacture cut and bent rebar to your schedule and pick your mesh and accessories.
- We quote competitively and deliver through our nationwide network with next-working-day options.
Frequently asked questions
How much does rebar weigh per metre?
Multiply 0.00617 by the diameter squared. A 12 mm bar weighs about 0.888 kg/m, 16 mm about 1.58 kg/m and 20 mm about 2.47 kg/m.
What does A142 mesh mean?
The number is the steel cross-sectional area in mm² per metre width. A142 has 142 mm²/m, using 6 mm wires on a 200 mm grid, and weighs about 2.22 kg/m².
What is CARES approval?
CARES is the UK and Ireland certification scheme for reinforcing steel. CARES-approved supply gives traceable, independently certified rebar and processing, which is required on most structural projects.
Can you supply rebar to a bar bending schedule?
Yes. Send us your schedule and we will manufacture cut and bent bar to the exact shapes and lengths, ready to fix.
